It was a simple photo request to get a shot of one of his many antique cars that he owned. Not a photo of him, but just the car that was he was loaning to the event. He seemed to have lots of energy for such an old man, was friendly, and eager to show me his auto collection. The cars were parked in a large pole barn in a seeming puzzle of directions. It was going to require moving cars to get to the one needed.<p></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHbWoNUzWO_fTYfwusFnS3n7MxNvnnsWgnyd1m9RjlPA7EKrdi21DF1TG1YlxzUZr7my04QmtGbIqZX_tH4up2eeqTu2lhqPY1TMfC4FjrjD7QszwwbWZjfd1ARy3NWjqXyfQar-W-2dv-KU0DKTl8U431pW9WbrcQ3h5xHxOL7DmJpystf7TCHBnaNg/s1400/Edit_D2X_Sigma-30mm-f1.4-dx_DSC0068-dN-gig.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1039" data-original-width="1400" height="474" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHbWoNUzWO_fTYfwusFnS3n7MxNvnnsWgnyd1m9RjlPA7EKrdi21DF1TG1YlxzUZr7my04QmtGbIqZX_tH4up2eeqTu2lhqPY1TMfC4FjrjD7QszwwbWZjfd1ARy3NWjqXyfQar-W-2dv-KU0DKTl8U431pW9WbrcQ3h5xHxOL7DmJpystf7TCHBnaNg/w640-h474/Edit_D2X_Sigma-30mm-f1.4-dx_DSC0068-dN-gig.jpg" width="640" /></a> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I entered the barn with him as he moved the cars while rattling off facts about each car. The brown grass crackled under my feet in the 90 degree heat, and I didn't quite get what I was hoping to find. A Melville quote that I always hated..."Faith, like a jackal, feeds among the tombs, and even from these dead doubts she gathers her most vital hope"...was not evident. Instead I was drawn to a large stone statue that appeared to look to be of a native American chief from behind, and turned out to be a local Polish Priest named Marianus Matkowski whose congregation obviously loved him. His marker is on a slight crown of a hill, surrounded by towering firs, and graves arranged circularly around his. The deer scat was thick in one shady spot, and a hawk called periodically at me from the tallest tree. I don't go to graveyards because I don't believe spirits would hang around their spent bodies of dust, but this time it did feel spiritual. Not dead, but alive. I can only find a mention of Marianus in a 1959 directory of Priest of Polish descent, but I know there must be a story concerning such an expensive grave marker. There are companies that convert digital cameras to shoot in various pre-determined wavelengths of infrared. Usually they range from about 500 - 850 nanometers for digital photography. The lower numbers have altered colors to visible light, and the higher (800-850) tend to be black and white only. I purchased an old (classic 5D) camera that was converted to IR at 665nm, or "enhanced" color.<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhx0JKIKodAjkXBsv_q6vJF-7LtQlXPX6vnBzNmZ_xi6_E7_ylai30Jk9SDQiuSykAJXkQyAtgo0Qk5BMtIiX6RHveOdaifeV6yHLSHjbThmKVv5q6OYVedYDg3-tFJ60fHcZfByHMl2AFoMBKtomnZ6dDgnCss9Oy6a7_h7jOjWWJ3he_8QssfUIjMHQ=s1000" style="margin-left: 1em; In March I added a new to me camera - the Canon 5DSR. In May I found a new way to scan film negatives that results in perfect color. That prompted me to purchase an "Essential Film Holder" from an engineer working out of his kitchen with his wife in London, because they are swamped with orders. Next (there is always a next) I needed software to convert the scans to get that perfect color - enter "Negative Lab Pro". Which necessitated a used Nikon PG-2 focusing stage, a CRI 95 light panel, plus wireless triggers for the cameras. Straight up it has triggered a renewed energy in my passion for photography resulting in me shooting more images in the last seven months than the previous two years. </p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSIP8OkyNKd4ghdXFu0yKm6xPw7XTDoqsvWw_Fuvld6VQInkAlD-HBdHyhAz1oFd9ZYlwXPYXpFeI1lXiBEAxDjfW4ud1ilRcWnmSA4SeTbXLrJNjdbGcQdA7zwFv4XxDymVtq2PYeh-Yy/s1000/50mm-f2.8_SchneiderComponon-S_EL_DSC6713.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="667" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSIP8OkyNKd4ghdXFu0yKm6xPw7XTDoqsvWw_Fuvld6VQInkAlD-HBdHyhAz1oFd9ZYlwXPYXpFeI1lXiBEAxDjfW4ud1ilRcWnmSA4SeTbXLrJNjdbGcQdA7zwFv4XxDymVtq2PYeh-Yy/w213-h320/50mm-f2.8_SchneiderComponon-S_EL_DSC6713.jpg" width="213" /></a></div><p>This is the new way to scan negatives. You use a DSLR to shoot the negative. Pictured here is the Canon 5DSR (50 megapixel), a 50mm f2.8_Schneider Componon-S enlarging lens (proved better than my other four macro lenses) plus a set of Nikon "K" tubes. The Essential Film Holder, with a light panel providing the illumination. Max had more cats and dogs than anyone I knew. He loved to build things, and problem solve. His hands were all balled up and crooked from arthritis, and Max smoked pipes constantly. There were a number of reasons for this, but the number of eyeballs was one of the main ones. After about 8 months of entering photo contests on Viewbug seven entries have placed and/or won recognition, 77 have been deemed "Top Class", and another 878 entries have received "Peer Awards". Four of the seven Viewbug awards were won by this image.<br />

It's a beautiful lens. This was photographed by the dam in Grand Rapids Michigan on a very pleasant November evening.<br />

I got a bit busy, and I needed to recharge the soul. In the last 6 months I began participating in another photo site which aesthetically I liked it's design. I also let expire my FM gallery which reached 2.3 million views. Lots of views, but almost no action. So, the approximately 1200 images in the gallery were all thrown away. Cathartic! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I created an image for one of the new site's photo contest, and it won some awards. The new gallery is linked <a href="https://www.viewbug.com/member/James_Markus" target="_blank">here</a>, and here is the image.<br />

Each of the these were shot with a different lens and technique. The lenses used were a Tokina 17mm reversed (mounted with the rear of the lens facing forward), a Nikkor 20mm ais reversed, a Nikkor 28mm ais reversed, a Nikkor 105mm micro, and a Nikkor 135mm + extension tubes. There are lots of reasons, but I think she likes it this way now. This year I ended up with three keepers of Gerbera Daisies (a favorite), and I liked this particular color this year. I really appreciate the bokeh (out of focus areas) that the two lenses I used to shoot these images render. The first two are using the Nikkor 105mm f4.0 ais micro, and the last one is the Nikkor 105mm f1.8 ais with an extension tube.<br />

Vision of the future, and reality are two very contrasting themes in my life. Dreaming is no problem, but</div>
the reality is usually far less colorful. When I think about the 1960's I remember an explosion of colors.<br />
Colors we had never seen before outside of nature - like fluorescent shades of various primary colors showed up in publishing, and the culture. While experimenting with common tap water and dish soap I found little areas of this explosive color. I set out to capture one of these fleeting intersections of color. Here is one of the intersections, and a 100% crop of a piece of the image. Lets hope our futures become as colorful. <br />

A couple months ago my mother gave me this pocket watch. Its value is that it belonged to my grandfather; whom I never meet. However, I was born on his birthday and share his first name as my middle name (Paul). Yesterday, I gave the stem a twirl, and the watch leapt to life. The rhythm was amazingly precise, and I thought about how to capture that accuracy. This is a 150 second slice of time as recorded by the watch. Notice the perfect spacing of the minute hand. So, what is the "convergence of old"? Well, first there is the old man that took this image, me. Next, I employed a 35+ year old manual focus Nikkor lens (105mm f4.0 ais micro), and of course the watch itself.James Markushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06368990216413843593noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8022545640009105549.post-63948698390418257332015-03-21T22:56:00.000-04:002015-03-22T11:23:13.292-04:00Whimsical Photo Contest Grand Prize Winner Title: "<a href="http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=15216912">Chili Fire"</a><br />

Today, I literally went down a road less traveled by me - 36th street SW. Evidence of the recent economic crash was shockingly apparent. A sky-walk to nowhere.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijCddy1BRA_s5tKi-A0lli3xNA7-TZOrMhBnToLppE4zxjkSIZE8-q_QUK3lFCK11epSdYwpB0UoJwIgvr0f67sJuEo9YVX3uZ5mrw-E_TxOCJ770_YQ46yorYv5cIZ3O92YK0BdW9Dzm5/s1600/Skywalk-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijCddy1BRA_s5tKi-A0lli3xNA7-TZOrMhBnToLppE4zxjkSIZE8-q_QUK3lFCK11epSdYwpB0UoJwIgvr0f67sJuEo9YVX3uZ5mrw-E_TxOCJ770_YQ46yorYv5cIZ3O92YK0BdW9Dzm5/s1600/Skywalk-1.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This sky-walk once led to one of the largest factories in Wyoming Michigan. It filled a city block - probably close to half a square mile of space. For some reason GM (General Motors) left this sky-walk structure in place after completely wiping the ground clean where the factory once stood.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It seems a gesture kind of like giving the middle finger to the community where thousands toiled to make GM millions of dollars. I can't imagine the number of lives destroyed by this decision, but it is a very good reminder of the actual stewardship and care that a large corporation has for the local community. There is a reason that some roads are less traveled, and 36th street is now one of them.James Markushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06368990216413843593noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8022545640009105549.post-57620380770692541102015-03-04T16:58:00.002-05:002015-03-04T16:58:54.161-05:00Monthly Project Win on Photo.net<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In January there was a monthly project on Photo.net that was about DOF (Depth of Field).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr3lYOJjzm3Hx_IUf7eObUoNn7b-7F6YVeR7eRf_H1V-ydZZDdzXweykm3E3CFyPc_y1qR-9HN58kH0ihP1PXP2xjBwhXbHDuJtYMvU667UqRJ7Njctl5ykgcud4wY1b8sgGlPjNpGvx5m/s1600/Charlie_DOF.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr3lYOJjzm3Hx_IUf7eObUoNn7b-7F6YVeR7eRf_H1V-ydZZDdzXweykm3E3CFyPc_y1qR-9HN58kH0ihP1PXP2xjBwhXbHDuJtYMvU667UqRJ7Njctl5ykgcud4wY1b8sgGlPjNpGvx5m/s1600/Charlie_DOF.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
I had just acquired a beautiful used Nikkor 105mm f1.8 ais lens off the popular auction site which proved perfect for the project. So, I shot the nearest model available...Charlie. Here is the lens...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2Lf-s0Y1VhLZ7SPGB-snhdPD-J6utBG609qvXJG6RyEpUWX9VbD-arbDY2icm1AGu8fYeZdIHeUz74q8wNgoSREoQ-YJ65AytYCkb5AhZsU0yTyuSTYhJTLOAdzTu8n6h068uQ2vM_a7m/s1600/Nikkor+105mm+f1.8+ais.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2Lf-s0Y1VhLZ7SPGB-snhdPD-J6utBG609qvXJG6RyEpUWX9VbD-arbDY2icm1AGu8fYeZdIHeUz74q8wNgoSREoQ-YJ65AytYCkb5AhZsU0yTyuSTYhJTLOAdzTu8n6h068uQ2vM_a7m/s1600/Nikkor+105mm+f1.8+ais.jpg" height="491" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
There was a prize for the project, and I used it to purchase a canvas print of my tribute to Vincent Van Gogh's "Sunflowers" - though my version is an antithesis of his sunny bright yellow - live flowers - round vase etc. The unfortunate thing about the tribute is I shot it with another ancient Nikkor - the 35mm f2.0 ai, but I sold it a while back. I wish I had not sold it. I think of lenses as brushes...at least I got to use it a few times. Here is my "Vincent". <br />

Barb had purchased a delicious Rosemary herb bread, but she improved upon it. Here is the result. This loaf only lasted about 10 hours. BTW Barb also made the bread board. Usually I can't stand sugary things, because they are so cloyingly sweet. Biscotti with dark chocolate dipped in nice hot black coffee is another matter. The binge only lasted a short while, and I thought that entering an image into a food competition was actually fitting. Well, it must have hit the judge on some level, because he awarded a "mark of excellence" award in "I Shot-It's" latest food competition.<br />

This time a little boy gliding around the room with his arms out, and an awestruck couple passionately discussing the piece gave me the context I was looking for.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
Was checking out the art last night in Grand Rapids, and I found an unofficial entry. Sam kindly shot a photo to commemorate the occasion. I think this is my first image at iso 25600...impressive! Found another piece that is also impressive.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
I haven't been participating in the art contest the last few years, and it has changed quite a bit. The vibe is different, and some venues don't seem invested in the competition to the same degree as in the past. I will continue to visit additional venues, and art over the next couple weeks.</div>

I got notice this morning that this photo was given an award of excellence by I Shot It.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With Angus moving out, and Sam becoming more reclusive - the house seems very quiet now-a-days. Nothing like the constant "Will you stop touching me" days of not so long ago. Quiet is nice! About 5 weeks ago I won another Weekly Assignment at FM with the topic being "Old School" which was conveyed by this image. Angus provided the hand modeling.<br />
